Brazil. An important diamond source since the first discoveries were made in 1725. Annual production is beČlieved to be approximately 270,000 carats; accurate figures are not availČable because of illicit trading and smuggling. The three principal proČducing States are Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso and Bahia; of lesser importance are Goyaz, Sao Paulo, Ma-ranhao, Para, Piauf and Rio Bran-co. Principal production is from gravČels in the river valleys. Mining is carried out on a small scale, mostly by individuals or small groups.
